Five on-duty journalists were martyrd during July uprising

In Keraniganj, Dhaka, journalist Md. Mehedi Hasan shared a one-room rental home with his wife and two daughters. His girls and wife would wait for him to come home every night. They were also waiting on July 18 of last year. However, Mehedi was hit in the chest by rubber bullets fired by police earlier that night in the Jatrabari neighborhood of Dhaka. He was pronounced dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital after being transported there.

Mehedi was a reporter for Dhaka Times 24.com, an online news source. He had traveled to Jatrabari to cover news that day.

Mehedi was one of five journalists who were martyred while performing their jobs during the July popular movement. One person was killed in Habiganj, three in Dhaka, and one in Sylhet. They included the murders of Tahir Zaman in Dhanmondi, Shakil Hossain in Uttara, and Mehedi Hasan in Jatrabari. Sohel Akhanji was assassinated in Baniachong of Habiganj, and journalist Abu Taher Md Turab was martyred while reporting in Sylhet.

The official government gazette reports that during the July insurrection, 844 persons were martyred nationwide. That list includes the names of the five journalists who were martyred.
